The 30 people and a dog who took part in this year’s social triathlon, whether it was just part or all, had a great time. The weather was perfect – warm with a nice breeze. The water in the morning at Denham Waterski lake was warmer than the outside air and well worth ditching the wetsuit. Breakfast at Durrans café was demolished with great anticipation by all who swam.
18 cyclists set off at 10:30, through the steam fair at Oaklands Collage, up and over to Wheathampstead, on to Nomansland Common and into Heartwood Forest for a photo call at the “Arc De Heartwood”. We stopped near Sandridge, for many a refreshing drink, for Ben a hot sausage roll and cake. Onwards to Childwickbury, Gorhambury and through Verulam Park, before taking the Alban Way all the way back to Liz and Dave’s. For those interested in figures, we took 3 hours to cover 19 miles, but only on the move for 2 hours 10 minutes at an average speed of 8mph.
Back to Liz and Dave’s for a great lunch spread. As 3pm arrived, post lunch apathy made it hard to get going again, however, we drove ourselves onwards, and the motley crew of hikers set off through tracks and open fields and parks around Smallford that most of us never knew existed. We walked the 7.1 miles in just under 3 hours.
Unlike other triathlons, we did not finish there. There was the small matter of the STAM AGM and evening BBQ. This was the 7th STAM Tri, and as always it was a fun and social day. Thanks to Liz and Dave for hosting and providing an excellent lunch and BBQ and giving up their house for the day – and then clearing up at the end!!
