ASA Midland Region Open Water Champs Craig Kirkland and Dave Latta proved themselves equally strong in open water as in the pool by winning gold medals at Bosworth Water in Leicester, on Sunday 13 July. Craig won the 40 - 49 age group in the 3k, and Dave won the 40 - 49 in the 1.5k. This was a great location and well worth a visit - Bosworth Water, Nr Hinckley, Leicestershire CV13 6PD July 2008 |

Good performance by St Albans Masters at Barnet Copthall Sprint Meet
Ann Broomfield was not on her own this year at the Barnet Copthall Sprint Meet on Sunday 7th September. She was joined by 8 other swimmers from St Albans Masters who produced some excellent results. Ann continued her success at this meet by taking 1st place in her age group in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, 50m and 100m Freestyle, and 100m IM. Other successes were Duncan Beveridge winning 1st place in 50m Fly, 50m and 100m Breaststroke. Vicky Platt shocked herself coming 1st in 100m Fly and 25 m Freestyle, and 3rd in 50m Freestyle. Jo Lee-Pearce had a good meet with 3rd place in 100m and 50m Backstroke, 50m and 100m Breaststroke, and 25m Freestyle. Craig Muckleston had a great swim coming 2nd in 50m Breaststroke and 3rd in 100m Breaststroke, IM and Fly, and Mark Beveridge won 2nd place in 50m Fly. Other swimmers who took part just missing out in the top places were Laura Coombes and David Latta. A mix of the St Albans swimmers came second in the 200m medley relays for the mens (160 - 199 age group), and the mixed (200 – 239), and 3rd place in the mens 200m Freestyle (160 – 199). ASA National Masters Sheffield Eleven swimmers from St Albans Masters swimming club competed at the ASA National Masters competition at Ponds Forge Sheffield held on 24 - 26 October. Age group medal winners from the action packed weekend were Austyn Shortman, who gave a very impressive performance winning Gold in the mens 50m Freestyle; Duncan Beveridge won silver for the 50m Breaststroke, breaking his last year's British record but just losing out on Gold by 0.05 secs; Craig Kirkland gave another strong performance winning silver in the mens 100m Individual Medley (IM) and Bronze in the 200m IM; Winning Bronze in the mens 4x50m Freestyle relay were Duncan Beveridge, Austyn Shortman, Craig Muckleston and Craig Kirkland; Jo Lee-Pearce for the women gave a strong performance winning Bronze in the 100m Backstroke; Winning an outstanding Gold in the womens 4x50 Medley relay were Laura Coombes, Jenna Morris, Jo Lee-Pearce and Susannah Ford. Ann Broomfield and Steve Ong win medals at the Barnet Copthall Distance Meet Ann Broomfield triumphed once again by winning 5 medals at the Barnet Copthall Masters Distance Meet on 19 & 20 July. She took 4 golds in the 800m, 400, 200m, 100m, freestyle, and silver in the 100m breaststroke. Ann was very pleased with her 400m fr knocking 8 seconds off her time from last year. In his first time at this meet Steve Ong took 3 medals - gold in the 100m fly and silver in the 100m & 800m free. Both swimmers commented on how nice, well run and friendly the Barnet meet was. STAM win Herts Senior League STAM had reason to celebrate after winning, for the first time, the Herts Senior League swimming competition held at Bishops Stortford on 29 November. Twenty six swimmers from STAM took part in this fast competition with the STAM A team taking 1st place with 128 points, Bishops Stortford 2nd with 122 pts, Hatfield 3rd with 101 pts, Hemel 4th with 84 pts, Hartham 5th with 54 pts and STAM B team 6th with 52 pts. This completed a successful year for STAM who reign county champions unbeaten for the third year running, and medal winners at the Nationals in October. November 2008 |

STAMSC push South Beds at Aylesbury. Swimmers from St Albans Masters swimming club (STAM) were split over the weekend (27 Feb - 1 Mar) with two of their top swimmers competing at the Swim Wales Open Masters at Swansea, Jo Lee-Pearce won an impressive Gold (200m IM) and two Silver medals, and equally strong Steve Ong won Gold (200m fly), Silver and Bronze. On Saturday 28 Feb, the rest of the team were giving their all at the Aylesbury Masters Gala, a fast moving well organised gala with 37 events. STAM, who were trophy holders from the previous year, secured a respectable 2nd place with 156 points, just 3 points behind winners South Beds with 159 points. Amersham were 3rd with 126 points, Aylesbury 4th with 125 points, City of Milton Keynes 5th with 115 points and 6th Bicester with 81 points. Full results. .March 2009 |

STAM win the Herts. ASA Masters Championship 2009 fourth year running. Another successful win for STAM as they secured the Herts. ASA Masters Championship Trophy for the fourth year running at Borehamwood on Saturday 27 June. Combined team scores were STAM with 572 points, ahead of second place Hartham with 393 points, and third place Hatfield with 304 points. Ten teams from around the county competed at The Venue, Borehamwood for the McMullen Masters Club Trophy. |

ASA National Long Course Masters - Cardiff Five swimmers from St Albans Masters swimming club competed at the ASA National Long Course Masters competition at Cardiff International Pool held on 19 - 21 June. In their age groups - Duncan Beveridge won gold in 50m Breast and silver in 100m Breast, Steve Ong won gold in the 200m Fly and Bronze in 100 Fly, Craig Kirkland won Bronze in 50m and 100m Free. Mark Beveridge won Bronze in 50m Fly. They all just missed out on more individual medals as did Ian Escritt in his first National competition. STAM swimmers collected a total of 37 individual gold medals, 21 silver and 19 bronze.
