Ann Broomfield wins yet more medals at the Barnet Copthall Distance Meet Sat/Sun 18&19 July

Ann has excelled herself once again by winning 5 medals at the Barnet Copthall Masters Distance Meet. She took 4 golds in the 800m, 400, 200m, 100m, freestyle, and silver in the 100m breaststroke. Ann commented that she had improved her times in all the freestyle events and was just slightly slower this year in the breaststroke. Ann, a mere 67, has swum since she was a child, stopping competing when she left school. Thirty years later she started racing again and took part in many competitions joining CoStA in 1991, she says there are only a few members now who were there then. She trained as a swimming teacher and a lifeguard and still lifeguards occasionally. Ann is a great example to us all and a real asset to the club - well done Ann.

ASA Inter Counties Gala Sat 15 November

Twelve swimmers from St Albans Masters formed a large part of the Hertfordshire team that took part in this inter-county competition at Newmarket on Saturday. The Herts Team Manager was our very own ex-Chairman, Richard Sumner who, with considerable help from Janet Gardiner, put the team together from the best Masters swimmers in the county. Even Richard swam in two relays which, he said, was entirely related to his age and not his speed. The large STAM contingent of swimmers helped the county to second place and the Runners up trophy, only 5 points behind winners Norfolk.

craig kirkland at lake windermere

Windermere in 4 hrs 34 mins

On 19 July, a bleak rainy Monday morning, Craig Kirkland set off from Fell Foot at the bottom end of Lake Windermere. Dodging sailing boats, and occasionally his support boat, he swam the 10.5 miles of the lake’s length in an impressive 4 hrs and 34 mins. His progress was monitored by all the cruises and clubs along the lake who, he found out the next day,  had exchanged various ‘comments’ amongst themselves as to his sanity!
